COCONUT
Coconut oil is not only delicious and great to cook with, it supports your immune system. Ninety-two percent of its fatty acids are in a particularly healthy class of saturated fatty acids called medium-chained triglycerides (MCTs). These MCTs, have been shown to be antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral. In his seminal book Medicinal Plants of the World, the dean of American herbalists, James Duke, wrote that coconut and coconut oil are used as folk remedies to treat more than 35 ailments. My personal recommendation: Barlean’s brand, available at all health food stores.
EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
Olive oil is very high in compounds called phenols, which are potent antioxidants. It is also mainly made up of monounsaturated fat, an extremely heart healthy kind of fat that’s central to the healthy Mediterranean Diet. Olive oil may also help to decrease the risk of colon and bowel cancer. But all olive oil is not created equal. The stuff you want is made from organic olives that are picked by hand; the oil is separated without the use of heat, hot water, or solvents, and it is left unfiltered. The first pressing produces the best stuff, known as "extra virgin" olive oil. Pay more- it’s worth it.
FLAXSEED OIL
Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil are one of the best sources on the planet for the important omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid. This wonderful omega-3 source can help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis, and many other degenerative diseases. But the benefits of flax are not limited to the omega-3 content. Flax is also a great source of something called lignans, which have a whole host of health benefits of their own. Lignans have a protective effect against cancer, especially those that are hormone-sensitive like breast, uterine, and prostate cancers. And remember, never cook with the oil, as it damages the delicate omega-3 fats, which don’t stand up to heat at all.
MACADAMIA NUT OIL
This oil is even richer in monounsaturated fat than olive oil. Monounsaturated fats are central to the Mediteranean diet that has been shown in virtually every single research study to be associated with lower rates of heart disease. It’s also one of my three favorite cooking oils, along with extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil.
SPECIALITY FOODS
BEE POLLEN
Bee pollen is a phenomenally nutritious and well-balanced food that can be consumed by people and domestic animals. It’s been called one of nature’s perfect foods because it is loaded with vitamins and contains almost all known minerals, trace elements, enzymes, and amino acids. It actually has more amino acids and vitamins than any other amino-acid-containing product like beef, eggs, or cheese! It also contains antioxidants, and it’s one of the few nonmeat sources of vitamin B12.
BEE PROPOLIS
Propolis possesses a multitude of pharmacological activities. It’s created by the bees by mixing a resinous sap from trees with wax back at the hive. Bees use it as a kind of glue, but people began using propolis more than 2,300 years ago for many purposes, the foremost of which was applying it to wounds to fight infection. Propolis possesses antimicrobial, antioxidative, antiulcer, and antitumor activities.
KIMCHI
Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish made of fermented chili peppers and vegetables such as cabbage (most common), radish, garlic, red pepper, onion, some kind of seafood (oyster or seafood are common), ginger, salt, (and sometimes a little sugar). Besides containing such great vegetables, kimchi is always fermented which means it’s loaded with healthy bacteria. It’s a potent source of "probiotics" like lactobacillus, which have been found to support and improve immunity, and which help control inflammation (an essential feature of so many degenerative diseases, including heart disease). Probiotics like those in kimchi help maintain a healthy digestive system, so critical to good health as we age.
SAUERCRAUT
Sauerkraut combines one of the healthiest foods on the planet (cabbage) with one of the most healthy forms of processing (fermentation). Fermentation refers to an ancient technique of preparation and preservation in which food is naturally "processed" by microorganisms such as bacteria that break down the carbohydrates and protein in the food. True fermentation gives you the amazing health benefits of "live cultures" like lactobacillus, which feed the "good" bacteria in your gut, creating a natural balance of gut flora that improves digestion and immune function, and help control inflammation a central feature of so many degenerative diseases, (including heart disease). The cabbage from which the sauerkraut comes is a superstar vegetable on its own, with anticancer benefits.
SEA VEGETABLES
There is practically no group of plants on the planet richer in nutrients, minerals, and trace minerals. As a group they are known for their ability to detoxify the body. It’s no coincidence that one of the most popular spa treatments is a seaweed wrap! It is also believe that they can help prevent assimilation of heavy metals such as cadmium as well as other environmental toxins. Seaweeds have also been studied for their possible anticancer effects.
WHEY PROTEIN
Whey protein powder provides extremely high-quality protein, but it also has a host of other health benefits. It can help you lose weight and gain muscle, and it provides powerful support for your immune system. It increases your body stores of glutathione, arguably the most valuable antioxidant in the body. And it may even lower blood pressure a bit.
